Progress Report: Showing Your Work

Hello, gamers. Still no update just yet, but in the interest of communicating how I'm using my time:

I have been proofreading stuff while trying to transfer all I've written to a new format, so that I can eventually shift all of my work to Affinity Publisher 2. Most of the "why?" boils down to some very boring technical stuff and issues like crashing, so I will spare you the details.

However, you're probably interested in knowing where I've gotten so far, what's taking so long, things like that. In the interest of communicating with players and readers, here is a short series of lists I'm going to try and maintain until my proofreading and editing is complete.

To Do

  • finish proofreading.
    • I am but a single translator editing a 742-page PDF (and there's further content still in seasonal events, prewritten adventures, additional splatbooks, etc.), I've been trying to catch and patch errors as they appear, but it's become increasingly clear that at some point I need to sit down and really commit to a proper proofread. However, now that I need to reorganize all my files, this seems like the perfect time to check the entire book.
  • substitute the existing tutorial images with vector graphics.
    • Vector graphics will hold up better at various resolutions, and this enables me to throw in a bit of visual flair that's otherwise a little more tricky to do with FoundryVTT screenshots. Raster images (that is, the existing token graphics) don't look good as vectors, though, so this necessitates drawing two new token graphics: one for the attacker, and another for the generic enemy being used as target practice.
  • change how the Setting Details are presented.
    • The way the character images float in the middle of the text is... kind of a nightmare, especially when this format demands detaching the portraits from the character text. I should figure out a way to clearly section the character/region profiles without having a lot of empty space.
  • replace all instances of "SLv" with "SL" or similar.
    • While the Japanese text uses "CL" and "SLv" exactly like I do, this still seems strangely inconsistent.
  • rewrite the Fortune Teller skills
    • Phrasing like "Your wisdom is increased by the Balor Card." bothers me. "The Balor Card bestows wisdom upon you" seems nicer.

Current Changes

  • changed how headings are stylized.
    • In the next release, instead of continuously making headings smaller, headings of level 4, 6, and 8 (though I've never had to nest that many headings) will be italicized.
  • moved all translation notes across the whole book into the foreword.
    • Having translation notes mixed into the text makes sense for some publications, but I don't think it makes sense here. Sure, explaining "Tanu-kin" is neat, but it's a weird and infrequent break in a part of the book that otherwise needed relatively few translation notes, and in several other cases I've just been looking to replace terms with anglosphere equivalents.
  • did some internal reorganization of my paragraph styles and character styles.
  • changed the formatting of the Filled With Online Reuse Policy and the associated contact links.
  • removed the graphics used for the Ability Scores and Derived Scores. It's cute, but not consistent.
  • adjusted the credits, listing the name of each artist who'd worked on the icons used for items, weapons, skills, etc.
  • changed all instances of "Wish Star" to "True Wish Star"
    • There's a little linguistic trick the Japanese uses, writing both the Wish Star and Patchwork Wish Star names in different scripts, but this isn't really an option we have in English, so the pair is now "True Wish Star" and "Patchwork Wish Star" instead.
  • replaced "Destroyed:" in enemy profiles with "Zeroed:".
    • nobody has complained about "Destroyed" being ambiguous, but this is a tiny bit more explicit and it also saves a tiny bit of space.
  • redid parts of the "Minor Rules" section.
  • made the hexes decorating the corner of the pages 50% grey instead of black.
  • changed the page margins for body text.
  • adjusted how page numbers and section titles are presented.

Errata

  • The ability for characters of CL 15 or higher to trade a CL for a Patchwork Wish Star is not tied to receiving a GM Stamp, but merely an option they have at the end of the adventure. The text has been shifted around to account for this.
  • The rules on Resting don't actually say to roll 3d6 separately. You can totally houserule that if you want to, but the Japanese just says that the person spending Fortune rolls and then restores that amount to everybody.
  • The text for the Demonica's "Armor Skin" is incorrect, and should instead read:
Effect: Your body is protected by your skin changing into scales, armor, or similar. You gain a bonus of (SLv * 3) to all Defenses. If you don't have armor equipped, this bonus becomes (SLv * 8).
  • For the skills "Guardian Spirit", "Meat Shield", all instances of "normal attack" should be "targeted attack" instead.
In effect, these Skills are effective against Skill-based attacks, and Full Attacks, but not area-of-effect attacks.

Side Hustle

... also, I've been working on a secondary splatbook: "Isekai Pariah", a homebrew using some of the themes already present in Filled With Online (special characters with meta-knowledge about the world are thrust into a realm inhabited by blissfully ignorant natives).

In Isekai Pariah, the Pariahs are characters from our world with divine sponsors, thrust into a world of swords and sorcery, where the natives have overthrown the propertied merchant classes, the royals, and the clergy, all of them "villains" who summoned Pariahs for their own selfish ends.

Here, the natives are not unaware of the Pariahs' existence. Instead, they tend to treat Pariahs as potential enemies whose motives are unclear. Often, to mark yourself as a Pariah is to mark yourself for death.

At this time, Isekai Pariah includes a small number of more traditional races, and rules for representing racial hybrids as multi-classed characters.

  • Affine: a race consisting of elemental spirits.
  • Centaur: a race consisting of half-humanoid, half-equine beings.
  • Draconian: a race consisting of dragons taking lesser forms.
  • Dwarf: a short and stout race, made resistant to poisons by constant exposure.
  • Elf: a tall and slender race, with various combat arts centered on weakening foes from afar.
  • Gnoll: a hyaenid race with shamans who channel spirits, and savage warriors who revel in splitting foes in half.
  • Halfling: a short and thin race with members who use their neotenic features to get by.
  • Koinon: A prolific humanoid race with rounded ears on the side of their head, credited with the invention of currency (or "coins", as they're colloquially known.)
  • Lizardfolk: bipedal reptiles with brave characters.
  • Melusine: legless beings who move through aquatic magic.
  • Orc: a bulky race with horns, tusks, and other such features, with a predilection for large weapons.
  • Rampant: beasts who stand upright, descended from fairies but rendered mortal by crossbreeding with Koina.
  • Whangam: small beast races such as kobolds, goblins, and "dogbolds", who excel at the use of traps, bombs, etc.

Here's an excerpt of a work-in-progress story.

Yuuta Kaneki’s Damnation

Thrown into the path of a speeding truck, anybody would have assumed that my life would flash before my eyes. Yet, I felt no such sensation, and my life came to an end.
I awakened to hear my name called by an unbelievably attractive woman.
“Yuuta Kaneki… how unfortunate that thine life would meet its end here.”
An array of six feathered wings extend from her back, and she has immaculate blonde hair that reaches as low as her ankles. Greeted with the sight of this angelic being, I murmur “I… I really did die, didn’t I?”
“My child, I offer but a simple choice. Shall the flame of thine existence fade away, or art thou eager to see vitality returned to thine body?”
“I… yes! I need to live again! There’s so much left undone and unsaid! My sister is bedridden, and I don’t know what will happen if I’m not there to support her! Oh, Goddess, please revive me!”
I kneel before the holy figure, tears streaking down my cheeks. A gentle smile spreads across her face.
“I will see to it that thine sibling is dealt with. Yet, young Yuuta, I would issue to thee a quest. On a planet far, far away, there is a realm called ‘Alatria’. A dark force threatens this land, and I am in need of a champion to make my will known. To this end, I grant thee a small selection of divine blessings.”
The goddess gestures to one side, where something similar to a holographic screen pops up. There’s a grid of somewhere around 60 options, and I take a moment to read through the labels.
Item Storage… Potential Unlocked… Omniglot… Status Appraisal…
My immediate reaction is a simple one. “Aren’t these ‘cheats’?”
The goddess smiles and nods. “Indeed. ‘twas my understanding that thou would have no issue in understanding what is being offered here.”
